Mycotoxins – The Invisible Danger

What are Mycotoxins

Mycotoxins are potent toxins produced by moulds that can severely impact human health, particularly through immune suppression, inflammation, and allergic sensitisation.

These toxins are commonly found in damp indoor environments, attached to mould spores or dust particles, and are resistant to heat and standard filtration methods.

Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungi, primarily from the Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium genera. These toxins are not essential for fungal survival but serve as chemical defences against competing organisms.

Mycotoxin Sources and potential health impacts

Mycotoxin

Common Sources

Health Impact

Aflatoxins

Peanuts, grains, indoor dust

Liver cancer, immunosuppression

Trichothecenes

Water-damaged buildings, wheat

Cytotoxicity, immune disruption

Ochratoxin A

Coffee, cereals, airborne dust

Kidney damage, immune suppression

Zearalenone

Corn, dust on surfaces

Hormonal imbalance, inflammation

How Mycotoxins can impact your health

  • Immunosuppression: Inhibition of macrophages and T-cell function
  • Inflammatory response: Induction of cytokine storms in sensitised individuals
  • Respiratory stress: Aggravation of asthma and allergic rhinitis

High-Risk Indoor Environments

  • Damp homes with mould contamination
  • Healthcare settings asthma, Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS), immunocompromised patients
  • Aged care facilities
  • Childcare centres and schools with a history of water damage

Airora vs Mycotoxins

Airora’s hydroxyl diffusion technology offers novel, ventilation independent, preventative protection against mycotoxins.

Airora reduces exposure to both airborne and surface-borne mycotoxins through a continuous in-space cascade of hydroxyl radicals which neutralises these immune-reactive toxins in real time before they can do any harm.

Description automatically generatedAirora is unique. Airora simply neutralises the mycotoxins wherever they are, both in the air and on surfaces.

Airora’s Hydroxyl Radical cascade rapidly diffuses throughout the space, independently of ventilation, breaking down aflatoxins and trichothecenes into non-toxic fragments, rapidly oxidising proteins, lipids, and other structures found in mycotoxins (thus disrupting IgE-binding and immune activation), and reduces fungal spore viability on surfaces.

And more …

Airora has other benefits that no traditional air cleaner / filter can effectively achieve, it destroys or neutralises all types of germs, allergens and odours and most other irritants and harmful pollutants throughout entire indoor spaces.
